Limiting the number of attempts learners can make at a question

To increase the challenge for your learners, you can limit the number of attempts they are allowed to make at questions.

This can help encourage learners to think more carefully about their answers and reduces the likelihood of guessing the correct answer by eliminating the other options.

You can set the number of allowed question attempts to a maximum of 20. Once a learner has exceeded the number of allowed attempts, the question will become locked and the user will no longer be able to interact with it or submit any additional attempts.

The attempt limit applies to all the questions in your course so you only need to set it once.

Setting the allowed number of attempts

1. Open your Project

2. Select Questions & Completion from the top toolbar

3. Open the Questions accordion

4. Use the How many attempts will your learners have? slider or type a number into the text box to the the right of the slider to set the number of attempts your learner will have:

5. Choose whether to display the remaining number of attempts to the learner

6. Select Apply Changes

Tip: If you hide the number of remaining attempts, consider adding a note in your Project to inform learners that their attempts are limited.

Testing your questions

You can test your questions and the limits you've set in Preview mode. You can find out more about how to do this in Previewing your Project before sharing it with your learners.
