How to Generate a Project Using AI

Welcome to the new AI content generation workflow in Elucidat! This feature isn’t about replacing your expertise as an author; it’s designed to accelerate the hardest part of course creation: turning complex source material into structured learning. Instead of staring at a blank page or a dense PDF, the AI handles the initial manual groundwork, giving you a structured first draft in minutes.

Here is a step-by-step guide to generating your first AI-powered project.

Before You Begin: Preparation & Limitations

  • Best Practices for Source Files: For the best results, upload clean, well-structured PDFs. Processing times depend on file size, so if you have an overly long document (e.g., hundreds of pages), it is highly recommended to break it into smaller documents. Splitting content by topic can also help the AI prioritize information better.
  • File types: The AI currently only supports PDF uploads. Audio and video files are not supported by the AI generation and must be added manually in the editor later.
  • File limits: You can upload a maximum of 10 PDFs, and each document must be 10MB or smaller.
  • Language Support: The AI currently only supports English output. However content can be translated once the project is generated using our translation tools within Create. Additional languages will be supported soon (French, Norwegian, German).

Step 1: Start Your Project and Upload Sources

  1. Click “Create Project”
  2. Click “Generate with AI” as your primary entry point.
  3. Upload your source PDFs.
  4. The AI will analyze your uploaded PDFs for images. Any identified images can be selected and extracted to use directly within your new project's knowledge base.
  5. Add any additional images that are relevant to your project.

Step 2: Define Your Project Details

Next, you will need to provide context so the AI knows exactly who the project is for and what it should cover.

You can manually input these details, or use the AI Expert suggestions to fill them out automatically based on your uploaded PDFs. You will need to define the following:

  • Audience: Who is taking this training? E.g. New employees, Leadership Team, Sales - be as specific as you can
  • Learning objectives: What should the learner achieve? How do you want the learner to understand the PDF and what should they be able to do at the end of the content?
  • Competency: What is the required expertise level? Are they experienced or do they have a basic understanding?
  • Length: Should the course be short, medium, or long?
  • Project description: A brief summary or scenario detailing the focus of the learning.

The AI will utilise this information to ensure the project is focuses on the content in the right way for the learner.

Step 3: Review and Edit the Project Outline

Based on your inputs and source documents, the AI will generate a proposed Project Outline. The AI uses built-in instructional design best practices to organize your content into learning-appropriate formats (such as introduce, explain, demonstrate, practice, and summarize).

Always review the project outline before generating the full project. You have full flexibility and control to:

  • Review the proposed chapters and pages.
  • Edit page titles and descriptions.
  • Change the structure and page content types (e.g., introduce, explain or demonstrate)
  • Add new pages or remove suggested elements.

Step 4: Generate and Polish Your Final Project

Once you are happy with the outline, confirm your choices to generate the full project. The AI will build the course and take you directly into the Create editor.

What to expect: Think of this as getting 60–80% of the way there. The AI output will not be perfect, and editing is an expected part of the workflow. Your effort now shifts from manual creation and copy-pasting to simply reviewing, refining, and tailoring the content to your specific requirements. A final review against your learning objectives is strongly recommended before publishing.

⚠️ Important Note on AI Images: If the AI has placed extracted images into your project, do not use the "replace" function to swap them out. The AI writes descriptions and alt-text tailored specifically to the original image. If you want to change an image, simply delete the existing image block entirely and add a new one manually.
