Understanding how your learners’ course progress is bookmarked

Elucidat courses automatically track (or bookmark) your learners’ positions as they work through a course. If the learner leaves the course, their position is recalled and they will be brought back to the last page they visited. Their progress for any interactions or questions they’ve already completed will also be restored.

Here is a quick reference overview of the information stored by bookmarking:

  • Current page
  • Pages already visited
  • Completed pages, interactions, and questions
  • Question outcomes (result, number of attempts remaining, score achieved)

Bookmarks are recorded using our own cloud-based bookmarking micro-service. As the learner progresses through a course, their progress and score is continuously updated via our bookmarking API and stored on our servers. This allows Elucidat courses to bypass the suspend data restrictions that conventional SCORM packages are subject to.

Resetting a bookmark

Bookmarks are not stored indefinitely. There are a handful of scenarios where bookmarked progress will be reset.

When a bookmark is reset, all progress collected up until that point will be cleared. Learners whose bookmark has been reset will need to start the course again from the beginning.

Here is a list of scenarios where bookmarking will be reset.

Scenario Who does it affect? Notes
A learner hasn’t accessed the course in over three months. That learner’s bookmark will be cleared.
A full re-release of a course is performed. All learners who are currently in progress will have their bookmarks cleared. When possible, you may perform a partial re-release that will retain learner bookmarking. See Retaining learner progress after re-releasing a course.
A learner’s course session in their LMS is reset That learner’s bookmark will be cleared.

Resetting bookmarking does not affect results that have been reported to your LMS and Elucidat Analytics. For example, a learner who has achieved a Completed result will not have this result revoked following a bookmark reset.
