An alternative method to using Auto-Translate to translate your courses is to use translation files.
These files contain all the text in your course, ready to be replaced with their translations. Once the file has been translated, you can upload it back into your original Elucidat Project to create a new language version called a Variation. The original Project will become a Parent.
A Parent and its Variations are linked together—changes you make can be pushed to the Variations ensuring that your multi-language content stays consistent with each other.
For example, if you add a new component to the Parent, you can sync this change and publish it to all the Variations at once. You can then download a new translation file, add translations for the new component and upload them back into the course to update your Variations.
This method is recommended if you're translating your courses in-house or using the services of a translation vendor.

Before you begin
There are several types of translation files available to choose from, each of which is suitable for a different workflow. For more information, see Choosing the right translation file format.
You can export and import files from either the editing interface or the Project library. It doesn't matter which method you use; both can be used interchangeably.
Exporting a translation file
From the editing interface
1. Open the Project you'd like to translate
2. Select Translations from the top toolbar to open the Translations menu
3. Choose Download translation file
4. Select the format you'd like to download:
- .json—file is downloaded in JSON format
- .xliff—file is downloaded in XLIFF format
- .csv—file is downloaded in CSV format
5. Select Download file
From the Project Library
1. Find the course you'd like to translate in the Project Library
2. Select the ellipsis icon () to open the Project options menu
3. Choose Download translation file from the menu
4. Select your preferred file format
5. Select Download file to export the file from the platform
6. Translate the file—either send it to your translation vendor or edit it yourself
Translating the file
Depending on your workflow, you'll either be using a spreadsheet to translate a CSV or sending an XLIFF or JSON to a vendor so they can translate it using specialized software.

Once the file is translated, you can import it back into your Project.
Importing the file into your Project to create a Variation
From the editing interface
1. In your Project, select Translations from the top toolbar
2. Choose Import translation
3. Select Upload file to browse your computer and select the file to upload
4. Choose the language of your translated course from the Select a language drop-down menu
5. Select Next
Caution: If a Variation in the selected language already exists, the translation file will overwrite the text in that Variation rather than create a new one. This is useful if you want to re-translate or update the Variation [LINK] but should not be used if you want to keep the existing Variation as it is. |
You will be shown a preview of what your translated course will look like. This is a good opportunity to quickly scan through your course and check whether the translated text is correct.
6. Select Import translation to confirm your upload and create your Variation
Once the Variation has been created, you will be taken to it in the editing interface where you can make further edits and adjustments if you need to.
From the Project Library
1. Select the ellipsis icon () to open the Project options menu
2. Choose Import
3. Select Upload file to choose the translation file you'd like to use
4. Choose the language of the new translation from the Select a language drop-down menu
5. Select Next to see a preview of the translated course
6. If you're satisfied with the result, select Import translation to create your new Variation
