Syncing changes between your Parent and its Variations

Parents and Variations are linked Projects that enable you to create multi-language learning content. They stay up to date with each other via syncing

When you make a change to the Parent, those changes need to be synced with its Variations to ensure they match. Structural changes like adding a page or deleting a component will always be included in a sync but if you have added or changed text in the Parent, you can also choose whether or not to Auto-Translate the new text as part of the sync.

For more detailed information about how syncing works, see Understanding how syncing works in Parents and Variations.

Syncing your changes

Syncing changes will become possible when you have edited something in your Parent. Each time you make a change in your Parent, you'll be prompted to sync by a banner alert appearing at the top of your Project.

1. Select Sync changes from the banner

2. Choose the scope of changes you'd like to sync to your Variations:

  • Auto-Translate changes since last sync—translates any text that has been added or changed since the last time your Parent and Variations were synced.
  • Auto-Translate entire Project—translates and syncs all everything from the Parent to all Variations.
  • Don't translate changes now—syncs all changes from the Parent to the Variations except for text which is ignored.

3. Select Update to sync your changes to your Variations

From the toolbar

If you've dismissed the banner, but would still like to sync your changes, you can access the sync options from the top toolbar.

1. In your Parent, select Translations from the top toolbar:

2. Choose Sync Variations from the menu

3. Choose the scope of changes you'd like to sync to your Variations. See Syncing scopes for a detailed explanation of each.

Identifying when a Parent and its Variations are out of sync

There are various visual cues to help you identify when a Parent and its Variations are out of sync.

Out of sync alert

You will be alerted with a banner appearing at the top of your Project when you make a change that puts a Parent and its Variations out of sync.

If you dismiss the banner and continue editing, subsequent changes won't re-trigger the alert. However, there are still other ways to tell when your Projects are out of sync.

In the top toolbar

If there are Variations that need to be synced, a red dot will appear above Translations in the top toolbar. Additionally, when the menu is opened, you'll see Sync required next to the Sync Variations option.

A warning icon also appears next to the Editing [Project type] label. When hovered over, it reveals a tooltip letting you know your Parent and its Variations are out of sync

In the sync options modal

Each Variation shows its synced status in the Sync changes with Parent language variation modal under the Synced column.
