Your first 15 minutes in Elucidat Create

Welcome to Elucidat Create!

This tutorial will take you through your first 15 minutes in Create. By the end, you’ll have created your first Project and built a solid foundation for your elearning course. You will also open your course in Preview mode to understand how to see and interact with it from a learner’s point of view.

For the best experience, we recommend opening Elucidat Create in one tab or window and this tutorial in another. This way, you can follow each step in real time and see your progress immediately.

Before you begin

Before you can use Elucidat Create, an Administrator must have invited you to their team or modified your User Role to grant you access. If you don’t have access to Create yet, speak to your Administrator.

When you have access, you can access Elucidat Create in several ways:

1. Opening the Create homepage

When you log in to Elucidat Create, you'll be taken to the homepage. From here, you can access the different libraries that store your content. In this tutorial, we'll focus on Projects—the library containing your Elucidat Create Projects.

This is the default view on the Create homepage.

The Project Library contains all the Projects that you are permitted to access including Projects that you have built and Projects that others have built and shared with you or your organization.

Select Projects from the sidebar menu to switch back to it from one of the other sections.

Next step: Create a Project and begin the first steps in creating your elearning course.

2. Create a new Project

To begin building your elearning course, you need to create a new Project.

A Project is the workspace where you design, build, and edit your elearning course. You’ll add pages, text, images, questions, and more—just like building a presentation or website. Everything you do in a Project will shape the final course that your learners will take.

  1. Click Create Project to get started.

    elucreate-homepage-new-account-create-project
  2. Choose Create from scratch from the menu to start a brand new Project.

Your new Project will be opened in the editing interface—the area where you can carry out all of your content edits and Project configuration.

3. Press Save to add the new Project to your library.

Nice work! You just created your first Project!

Next step: Explore the editing interface and learn how to customize the content in your Project.

3. Configuring a component

Your new Project includes some placeholder content to help you get started.

It contains two components (a part that allows your learners to interact with your course in different ways) and some placeholder images.

The top component is a Page heading—perfect for introducing a topic with a title and image.

elucreate-project-component-page-heading

The one below is a Call to Action. These encourage learners to take action (like pressing the Continue button to navigate to the next page).

elucreate-project-component-call-to-action

Some other examples of a component might be a multi-part Accordion that gradually reveals information as each item is opened or a question that your learner should answer to achieve a score.

3.1. Editing text

Let’s start by editing the text in the Page heading component.

  1. Click the Page heading component to select it for editing—a blue border around the component indicates it is selected.
  2. Choose Toggle text editing (elucreate-toolbar-toggle-text-editing-icon) from the toolbar on the right hand side to enable text editing.

    elucreate-project-toolbar-toggle-text-editing
  3. Type in the text fields to add your text.
    1. Title. A good place for a headline or title.
    2. Text. Use this to add some context.
    3. Text shown after any interaction items. Any text you may want to include at the end can go here.
  4. Press Save to save your changes.

    elucreate-project-save
  5. Click Toggle text editing again to disable text editing.

3.2. Adding an image to the component

Now, replace the current placeholder image in the Page heading component with a new image from your computer’s files. When you upload a new image to your Project, it is also added to your organization‘s Asset Library so it can be used again.

  1. Click the Page heading component again to select it for editing.
  2. Choose Images (elucreate-toolbar-images-icon) from the toolbar to open the image editing options.

    elucreate-project-toolbar-images
  3. Press Choose image.

    elucreate-project-toolbar-images-choose-image
  4. Choose Upload from the list of options.
  5. Upload an image from your computer‘s files.

The image will be added to the component.

3.3. Changing the background colour or image

Each section’s background colour is set automatically by the Project’s Brand Style

The Brand Style is a blueprint for your Project’s appearance. Because of this, you shouldn‘t need to directly change the Project’s appearance very often, but you can make individual adjustments if you need to.

Let’s replace the purple background placeholder image to something that’s more aligned with your brand.

  1. Click the Page heading component.
  2. Choose Toggle Style editing (elucreate-toolbar-toggle-style-editing-icon)from the toolbar.

    elucreate-project-toolbar-toggle-style-editing
  3. Press Choose image.
  4. Choose Upload.
  5. Choose an image from your computer‘s files to upload it to the component.
  6. Press Save.

The background image will be added to the component.

Great job! You’ve updated the placeholder components and explored editing basics. Your course now has its own look and feel and is already starting to take shape!

Next step: Add your own content by inserting new components and pages into your Project.

4. Adding content

By now, you’re likely getting more familiar with the editing interface and some of the tools you’ll use to edit your course’s components and their text and media.

Now that you’ve edited some existing content, let‘s add something new.

4.1. Adding a new component

There are a lot more components to choose from that can make your course interactive and engaging. For example, a Carousel is a great interaction for presenting information in a sequence.

Let’s build a Carousel with three slides each representing a step in a sequence.

  1. Click the + button in between the Page heading and the Call to action components—this adds a new section to your page. Sections divide the page into parts, and each part can hold one or more components.

  2. Choose Carousel from the menu to add it to your new section.

  3. Click the Carousel to select the component for editing.

    elucreate-project-editing-carousel
  4. Choose Interactions (elucreate-interactions-icon) from the toolbar to open the Carousel’s editing options.

  6. Repeat for Item 2 to edit the text and images for the second slide.
  7. Select Add item to add a new slide to the Carousel.

  8. Open the newly created Item 3 to edit its text and images.
  9. Press Save.

Use the Next and Previous buttons on the Carousel to cycle through the slides and see your content.

4.2. Adding a new page

Most Projects have their learning content spread out, structuring topics and concepts across multiple pages to make them more manageable. Let’s add a new page to your course ready for some new content to be added later.

  1. Open the Project overview menu on the left-hand side of the page.

    elucreate-project-editing-project-overview-menu-closed
  2. Press the + button to open the page management options.

    elucreate-project-editing-project-overview-menu-open-add-button
  3. Click New page to add a new page to the chapter.

The new page will be added with the placeholder content, ready for you to continue building your elearning course.

4.3 Experimenting with your content

In Create, you have lots of freedom to experiment with different versions of the learning content you build. For example, you can switch a component’s type without losing the text and media content you’ve already added to it.

Let’s switch the Carousel to a Timeline to better show the sequence over time.

  1. Go back to page 1 by selecting it from the Project overview menu.
  2. Click the Carousel to enable it for editing.
  3. Choose Components from the toolbar.
  4. Choose Timeline from the menu.

The content you already added to the Carousel has been transferred and adapted to the new Timeline format.

Congratulations! You’ve taken some big steps in building your course. You’ve edited existing content, added new components, created a new page, and even experimented with different component types—all essential skills for designing engaging elearning in Elucidat Create.

Next step: Open your Project in Preview to see how it looks and works from a learner’s point of view.

5. Preview and test

An important part of building a course is keeping your learners‘ experience at the front of your mind. Regularly testing your course in Preview is a good habit to pick up.

Preview mode lets you see how your course looks and works for learners in your Learning Management System (LMS). Here you can interact with the pages you’ve built, test the course’s navigation, or see how your course looks at different screen sizes.

Let’s take a look at the Timeline you’ve built and test the navigation button on page 1.

5a. Switching to Preview mode

  1. Click the Preview button () located in the top toolbar.

    elucreate-project-editing-preview-button
  2. Scroll down to the Timeline.
  3. Press the + button to open each Timeline item.

    elucreate-project-preview-timeline

5b. Previewing different screen sizes

The buttons at the top of the page can change the screen size of your course. This can give you a good impression of how your learning might look across different devices such as tablets and phones.

Try changing to the Mobile view and take another look at your Timeline.

  1. Scroll to the top of the page.
  2. Click the Mobile view button (elucreate-device-mobile-icon) to switch to a mobile-sized screen.

    elucreate-project-preview-mobile-view
  3. Take a look at your Timeline again and see how it has changed. It has responsively adapted to the new screen size.

    elucreate-project-preview-mobile-timeline

All of the elements in your Elucidat Create course will responsively adapt so your learners’ experience can stay consistent regardless of the device they’re using.

5c. Testing navigation

Another important part of testing is checking whether your learners can navigate the course easily. Let’s test the Call to Action’s Continue button.

  1. In Preview, scroll down to the Call to Action section.

    elucreate-project-preview-call-to-action

  2. Press Continue to move to the next page in the sequence.

If the test was successful, you’ll move forward to the page you added earlier.

Components like the Call to Action already have a navigation button set to go to the next page. However, you can also add more ways of navigation by adding buttons to other components or setting up a Menu. Additionally, your Project’s Brand Style may already have navigation buttons set to appear in the footer.

6. Next step: Keep the clock running!

Congratulations! You’ve spent your first 15 minutes in Create building, customizing, and testing your elearning content and you’ve seen how it will appear to your learners across different devices.

Imagine what can you do in an hour!
